Lane Neave welcomes back Anna Ryan

This week we welcome back Lane Neave partner, Anna Ryan, who returns to our Christchurch office after a year’s parental leave.

Over the last twelve months, while raising her daughter Florence, Anna continued to work with Lane Neave clients in her specialty fields of competition and consumer law, and intellectual property. At the same time, she has also been busy in the following areas:

Leadership / governance

• In September 2019, Anna was elected for a two-year term as the Chair of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand (‘CLIPNZ’).
• After serving as a Trustee since 2013, Anna stepped into the role of Chair of the Contemporary Art Gallery (CoCA) in June 2020.

Publications

• Along with colleagues Ellen Sewell (Senior Associate) and Kristina Sutherland (Associate), Anna co-authored the New Zealand chapter of The Law Review’s ‘Dominance and Monopolies Review’ (8th edition). The Review was distributed to an online audience of more than 400,000 subscribers in over 100 countries.
• In July 2020, Anna shared her expertise in an article for Competition Policy International’s ‘Oceania Column’, discussing the upcoming criminalisation of New Zealand’s cartel laws.

Professional recognition

• Earlier this year, Anna was named as an ‘Up and Coming Practitioner’ by Chambers & Partners, a global publication that identifies and ranks the most outstanding law firms and practitioners across more than 180 jurisdictions. Anna’s ranking was awarded for her work in leading Lane Neave’s national competition/antitrust practice.

Asked to name a professional highlight from the last twelve months, Anna opted for the success of CLIPNZ’s recent conference, held in mid-August.

“The Covid-19 pandemic required our Board to rethink our annual conference. For the first time ever, CLIPNZ held this as an all-digital event over three days. One advantage was that the online format allowed us to assemble a distinguished line-up of speakers, including international experts such as the former Chair of the United States Federal Trade Commission, Maureen K. Ohlhausen, and former acting Assistant Attorney-General at the United States Department of Justice, Renata B. Hesse.
